Glossary

Short definitions first. First use of an acronym should be written in full — Multisource Feedback (MSF), Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Personal Development Plan (PDP).

Activity
Something you actually did in professional practice.
A real piece of work, teaching, improvement, procedure or meeting. Record it once and connect related evidence to it.
Assessment
A judgement by someone who watched you, or reviewed the case.
Not the same as a log (what you did) or evidence (the record you keep). An assessor records how the work was performed. Informal feedback and verification are different again.
Assessor
A professional who judges a defined piece of work.
An assessor does not have to be your supervisor. They should only complete an assessment if they know enough about the work to comment.
Assurance
How strongly independent people support the evidence.
Assessment, verification or professional confirmation increases assurance. Self-written notes alone usually provide less.
Capability
Something a professional should be able to demonstrate.
Sits under a domain. Several records may support one capability. Finer wording lives on the sub-capability or descriptor beneath it.
Career Timeline
Your roles, training and appointments over time.
Education, posts, rotations and appointments in date order. It is the spine of your longitudinal record.
Case Review
Structured discussion of reasoning and decisions.
The assessor may not have watched the original encounter. Use it for judgement and decision-making, not as a substitute for watching the work.
Certification
Formal confirmation that specified requirements were met.
Issued by an organisation. Some certifications expire. A course is not automatically a certification.
Clinical audit
Compare practice with a standard, then change and re-measure.
Not the same as research or quality improvement. An audit that stops after data collection has not completed the cycle.
Clinical method
History, examination and reasoning first; technology answers a question.
An Elaryvo educational session, not a College or regulator framework. Use technology to extend clinical judgement, not replace it. More testing is not automatically better medicine. Under-investigation can also be unsafe.
Clinical Observation
Someone watched you do professional clinical work.
Answers how you actually performed. History, examination, an encounter or a family discussion are typical examples.
Clinical Supervisor
Supports clinical work in a placement or professional period.
Typical involvement: induction, workplace assessments, midpoint and end-of-placement review.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Learning that maintains or develops your practice.
Courses, meetings, teaching, reading, simulation, audit and similar work. Credit rules vary. Elaryvo only shows awarded points when known or confirmed.
Coverage
Whether you have evidence for an area.
One of the Evidence coverage dimensions. Coverage asks if the area is addressed at all. It is not a regulatory approval score.
CQ
Cultural intelligence / cultural quotient — how you navigate difference.
The ability to function effectively across cultural settings. More than cultural facts. A term used alongside IQ and EQ in Cultural Fluency Without Compromise (Promise Monday, 2025). Not an Elaryvo score and not a validated psychometric.
Cultural fluency
Working effectively across cultures without erasing identity or dropping professional standards.
IQ, EQ and CQ are complementary. The Promise Monday (PM) Cultural Fluency Matrix™ is an original 2×2 of EQ against CQ from Cultural Fluency Without Compromise (Promise Monday, Promond Publishing, 2025), used with the author’s permission. Elaryvo does not score IQ, EQ, CQ or cultural fluency. Healthcare examples are Elaryvo’s application of the framework.
Currency
Whether evidence is recent enough where that matters.
Some pathways care about how recent an activity is. Older evidence can still be useful history.
Curriculum version
The named curriculum and the edition last checked.
Sits under specialty and career level on the Elaryvo professional tree. Confirm the live official source. Elaryvo does not invent missing requirements.
Development Log
A structured record of a learning activity and what you gained.
Includes the activity, your role, contribution, learning, outcome and supporting evidence. It can contain reflection.
Domain
A broad area of professional work.
Examples include patient management, communication, and research. Capabilities sit under a domain. Sub-capabilities and descriptors sit under a capability.
Education
Formal study that contributed to your professional formation.
Degrees, diplomas and similar awards. Store the issuing body and dates.
Educational Supervisor
Longer-term oversight of development, not only one placement.
Typical involvement: initial meeting, personal development plan, portfolio review and end-of-year review.
Elaryvo Reflection Cycle
Notice, describe, explore, learn, act, review.
An Elaryvo educational framework for reflective practice, not an official GMC, College or appraisal form. Not every encounter needs a written reflection. Elaryvo will not write the reflection for you. Do not include patient-identifiable information.
Entrustment
How much supervision you needed to do something safely.
Elaryvo uses its own independence levels, from close guidance to guiding others. These are not claimed as equivalent to any external scale.
Evidence Mapping
Connecting a record to the capability it may help demonstrate.
Mapping means potential relevance. It is not regulator acceptance, college approval or a guaranteed outcome.
Evidence Planner
Shows where evidence may help strengthen a capability or pathway.
Different from a personal development plan, though a planner gap can become a development objective.
Evidence Readiness
Elaryvo's view of how well current evidence supports a requirement.
It is not a pass probability, exam score or formal progression outcome. It looks at coverage, strength, currency, breadth and assurance.
Evidence-based practice
Best available evidence, clinical expertise, patient values, and local context.
Not blindly following publications. Ask, acquire, appraise, apply, assess. Evidence generated in one health system may not travel unchanged to another.
Export
A professional file generated from records stored at that moment.
Elaryvo certifies that the export came from stored records. It does not certify that the underlying activity is true merely because it was entered.
Feedback
How another person experienced or perceived your work.
May be individual, multisource, patient/carer or team-based. Feedback is not automatically a formal assessment.
Independence Level
How much support was needed for an observed activity.
Elaryvo's own scale, from close guidance to guiding others.
Licence
Permission to practise where a jurisdiction distinguishes this from registration.
Not every country uses the same split. Elaryvo keeps the issuing body's language.
Logbook
A running list of repeated activity — clinic, procedure, teaching.
Answers what experience you have had. Volume does not automatically prove competence. Observation sits beside the count. Not the same as evidence (a dated record) or assessment (someone else's judgement).
Multisource Feedback (MSF)
Views from several colleagues who have worked with you.
Useful for communication, teamwork, professionalism and reliability. Different from a supervisor's longitudinal report.
Personal Development Plan (PDP)
A short set of learning objectives for a defined period, reviewed later.
A PDP is a global professional habit, not an NHS product. You choose a few objectives, say how the plan is held (with an appraiser, with a supervisor, or self-regulated), collect evidence, and review progress. Some systems — for example UK medical appraisal — treat the PDP as the output of that meeting. Other countries use different names for the same idea. Elaryvo is not an official appraisal or College form.
Practice Ready Assessment (PRA)
Canadian workplace-based assessment of readiness to practise, usually through a provincial program.
PRA, including NAC PRA, is not the Royal College Practice Eligibility Route and is not a licence. MCC explains the national model. The province runs the program. The provincial MRA still grants the licence.
Professional Evidence
A dated record of work you did, with or without a file.
The thing you keep and later map or export. Stronger records show what happened, when, your role, what was demonstrated and who can confirm it. A file is not automatically strong evidence. Not the same as a log or an assessment.
Professional Portfolio
Your organised professional record over time.
Not a dump of files. Records, assessments, logs, career facts and exports that can be reused.
Progression Review
A broader look at progress using several pieces of evidence.
Elaryvo can prepare a progress summary. Formal training decisions remain with authorised programmes.
Promise Monday Cultural Fluency Matrix™
A 2×2 of EQ against CQ. Original framework by Promise Monday.
Developed in Cultural Fluency Without Compromise (Promond Publishing, 2025). Four patterns in context: technically capable but socially disconnected; strategic but distant; compassionate but misaligned; culturally fluent leader. Developmental, not a permanent label. Not a score.
Qualification
An academic or professional award.
Different from a short course certificate, though the terms overlap internationally.
Quality improvement
Systematic improvement of processes and outcomes.
Related to audit but not identical. Participation is not the same as leading or championing. Championship means sustaining or spreading improvement, not a flattering label.
Reflection
Your structured look at what happened and what you will do next.
Elaryvo uses five prompts: what happened, what you were trying to do, what went well, what was difficult, and what you will do next. Valuable for learning. Alone, it usually does not independently prove that an activity occurred or that competence was shown.
Registration
Being entered on a professional register.
Requirements vary by country. Elaryvo organises evidence; it does not grant registration.
Respondent
Someone completing feedback, not necessarily an assessor.
Used for 360, multi-team and patient/carer requests. Their names are not shown on anonymous reports.
SBAR
A four-part way to communicate a professional situation: Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation.
Use SBAR when handing over, escalating concern, or briefing a colleague. In Elaryvo, record the communication in the Communication log without patient identifiers. SBAR is a widely used professional structure, not an Elaryvo form and not a regulator assessment.
Sub-capability
The finer description of a capability.
Sits under a capability. The descriptor says what attainment looks like. Expected supervision and acceptable evidence types sit beneath it.
Subspecialty
A recognised area inside a specialty.
Optional. Use it when you practise a defined area such as neonatology or colorectal surgery. Confirm the current official list with the College. Skip it if you practise the specialty generally.
Supervisor
Someone with a professional relationship over time.
They may support development, review evidence and write reports. Supervision and assessment are related but not the same.
Supervisor Report
A broader judgement across a period of work.
May draw on several observations, assessments and interactions. Longitudinal evidence, not a single activity score.
The Tripartite Doctor
Elaryvo’s educational model: clinician, educator, scholar and improver.
An Elaryvo professional-development framework, not an official GMC, College or regulator model. Modern medical professionalism overlaps three roles throughout a career: clinician (character, competence, compassion), educator (trainer and lifelong trainee), and scholar and improver (evidence, audit, QI, research, experience of care). One activity can evidence more than one role. Elaryvo does not score the model.
Third Culture
Shared understanding that does not require one person to erase who they are.
A concept from Cultural Fluency Without Compromise (Promise Monday, 2025). In healthcare it means enough shared language, expectations and trust to work together, while professional standards, safeguarding and speaking up remain non-negotiable.
Triangulation
Using different kinds of evidence for the same capability.
A leadership observation, 360 feedback, a quality-improvement project and a supervisor report together are often stronger than four similar self-written notes.
Verification
Confirmation that something is genuine or attributable.
For records held in Elaryvo, Evidence Verification is the verification route unless the receiving college, regulator or employer states that it requires its own process. Verification answers whether evidence is authentic. It does not, by itself, answer whether you were competent.
Verifier
Someone appropriately placed to confirm authenticity.
An employer confirming dates, a supervisor confirming they completed an assessment, or an institution confirming attendance.
